The Pacer - The Ultimate Snow Machine!

Dave Cook of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada shared this story of how he braved "the worst snow storm of the decade" in his 1976 Pacer one day.

I remember my green 1976 AMC Pacer more than any other vehicle I have owned, which I can assure one and all, there have been many in the 44 years I have been driving. While my wife and I enjoyed the vehicle for the three or four years we owned it, the vehicle proved to be the most superior vehicle I have ever driven in the snow. With its wheels spaced almost four-square to the road, so to speak, it provided the most outstanding front-rear weight ratio, and therefore much needed traction in snow.

I was employed at the time as a newspaper reporter, and I recall one January day having to first drive my wife to her school and then drive to work in the worst snow storm of the decade. It was so bad that only two people made it into work that day. One of the photographers, who rose to the challenge by skiing into the office, and myself, who just simply drove to work. The traffic was sparse and stationary on the roadways through my loved city of Mississauga, Ontario Canada, but the little green Pacer slalomed its way through the snow covered streets. Now, it wasn't just a little snow fall -- we are talking snow up to the wheel wells of the car. I not only went downtown for the post office run, but later, the photographer and myself went out to the local restaurant for lunch. The owner of the restaurant lived a short walk away from his restaurant and his trek into work paid off; he only had to make two lunches. It was one of those days that the snowplows really didn't want to venture out, but they did, long after I was home after a "day at the office" thanks to my little green pacer.
