"[It] was used in a national commercial for a electronic tax return company, real funny commercial; it aired in the midwest and towards the Pacific. I have a tape with the whole finished commercial in English and Spanish; which was used for Spanish tellys like Telemundo." -Eddie Stakes

The caption reads: "Take, for example, the new AMC Pacer. A great new outlook. Style with a new flare. A car built for four foot tall Martians, grown taller to accomodate mere mortals! A little slow, a little overweight perhaps, but a definite step in the right direction. A great small car; rack & pinion steering, smart interiors, overdrive, plenty of visibility, actually fun to drive! Buy it! Show American Motors they're right! When yours is worn out, there'll be something even better!"

Four Pacers at 1999 Nationals
169. "I was at my first national meet and saw the pacer you once owned. The car has by all appearances has gone a long way. I do not know if you were there, but I was able to place my car with the rest. I had one of four pacer's in the show.

"It was a very enjoyable event, if you haven't been you need to go! The other part of my trip was to learn even at a national event, my car is seen less than most. You see, it is a Pacer D/L Wagon. I thought there would have been more, oh well.

"I became the proud owner when my father gave me the car during my last divorce. The car was bought by my Great Aunt from a dealer in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. They kept the car garaged for the fist winter then drove to CA. My father acquired the car from there estate and then gave it to me.

"When I got the car I had NO Idea, so many different type of people would comment, good and bad. Not letting that bother me, I to just told myself it is a car it was free, and drove VERY nice. When I got tired of having a rear main bearing leak I decided to repair it and add a chrome valve cover.

"One would think that this would be a simple task, HA! I ended up doing a ground up restoration, the only thing I didn't do was re-paint the car! After many dollars I drove the car to St. Louis. What a wonderful trip, I also received a Silver award! That was the first award from the restoration, my then fifth award, I now have six! I love taking this car to shows and display my work!

"I don't now if you do any traveling, but there are at times here, in Phoenix AZ 'rust free' Pacers for sale. If you get ready to find Pacer #2 and can deal with the plastic from AZ, you may get a good shell. The next National show this car will be at is gonna be in TX in 2001. Our club is holding a Regional meet 4/01/2000 and we hope to have a good showing.

"The first [photo] is when I got the car from my Dad, gave it a wax and received my first trophy. The second is what it looked like prior to restoration, the third is the four of us in MO." -Eric Groskopf, August 1999

182. "I was just surfing the net the night before I went back to school, and I decided to look up some stuff on my first car. About one month ago I got a 1979 Pacer as a surprise. But as my parents and my older brother were bringing it home from a town about 150 miles away, it threw a piston arm out of the bottom of the engine :(. Not too big of a shock because it had 154,000 miles on it. Now it is sitting at the repair shop waiting for a new engine. I found one, but I am still waiting for it to put in the car. The paint job is terrible on it, so I am going to repaint it like the Pacer on Wayne's World.

"I have already heard the comment 'You actually paid money for that?' [even though I] have never driven it. Look at the pictures and you will see what I mean about the paint." -Jon Rice

Speedy Pacer
183. "I found your site, and it brought back memories of my parents' '76 Pacer wagon. It handled surprisingly well. Anyway, I was 18 and my parents told me to take the car up island (Vancouver Island, BC) to pick up some paperwork, and I took my camera. :)

1976 Pacer with #1 records
186. "Here's an interesting photo I found in the October 3, 1999, Parade newspaper magazine. Here's the quote that came with the picture:

'My love for the '70s led me to purchase a '76 Pacer. And being a music buff, I got all 26 No. 1 singles from that year and affixed them to the interior roof, merging two artifacts of a bygone era.'

The car belongs to Kenny Tucker of Chalmette, Louisiana." -Jason Bowler

Joel-Judy on the way to restoration
187. "Bob [Wilson] (ArcticBoy), who lives not too far from me in Massachusetts, referred me to a great guy who owns a body shop a few towns away and who came over and didn't laugh at Joel-Judy Pacer, or at me for wanting to restore him!

"When we opened the hood, two mice scurried out. And there are lots of dead bees and bee hives all over, inside and outside of Joel, who has been out of service for about eight years.

"But he said he would do it!!!! And this is a guy who loves cars and doesn't look at it as just another job. We haven't even made an official agreement as to price and the et ceteras, but he sent for a tow truck to come and get Joel today. I took a digital photo of Joel as he was being pulled onto the flatbed, and here it is.

"I never thought I would get as emotional as I did. Now I'll be relying on you folks to keep me apprised of available parts as he needs them.

"I will be leaving Massachusetts and heading to Las Vegas maybe by next month and may not see Joel again for two years, but at least he's now in line for the loving care he deserves. YAYYYYY!!"

"Joel-Judy shows up well in that photo, but in actuality is severely rusted. The sheet metal along the bottom edges of the whole car is badly rusted. The rear bumper has a hole in it. The plastic inside is all brittle; the entire driver's side door panel, on the inside, is broken in a million pieces, and everything is discolored. There are rust spots throughout the whole car, and Joel has been sitting outside all his life in Massachusetts. The engine hasn't been turned over in eight years, so we expect extensive mechanical work will need to be done. The brakes were rusted locked when the guy started pulling it onto the flatbed, and the back wheels weren't turning, but they suddenly released when he started pulling it. The paint all over is ready to flake if you touch it the right way, and the sun has discolored the paint all over the car.

"I find myself wondering what will be left of the original Joel when he's all restored. I have been hesitant to join the registry in case I was not able to get someone to take Joel in before I left here, although if I had ended up having to junk him, I think I would have crawled inside him to die along with him. :-)" -Diane

189. "Here are a few photos of the '76 Pacer I recently finished(?) restoring. It was a typical $700 Michigan car when I got it: plenty of typical rust...and was also painted the typical burgundy body color.

"Over the course of less than two years I stripped it down to a body shell to repair everything the best I could. I've rebuilt most everything on it and replaced most every rubber part on it inside and out. I've added a few somewhat unique touches, while still maintaining the Pacer image:

Body colored bumpers
Rear seat headrests
Cupholders in place of the rear ashtrays
...and of course - the center console (among several other special touches)

"It's far from a 100 point restoration, but the intent is to make something I can drive instead of creating a piece of garage furniture!" -Brian Bradcoski

The Collearys' 1977 Wagon
190. "My 17 year old daughter is the principle daily driver of this 1977 Wagon with like-new original leather interior and very little rust, 110,000 original miles.

"[The car is] yellow with woodgrain, which I purchased in July 97 with 90,500 miles on the odometer. My 17 year old daughter drives it to school and work on a daily basis and just today returned from a 200+ mile round trip to Columbus, Ohio (I live in Dayton). My son just got his 'temps' so it looks like the venerable Pacer will be performing extended duties. According to the warranty in the glove compartment, it was purchased by a woman in Peachland, North Carolina on 22 February 1977. It now has almost 111,000 miles on the odometer with very little rust. I repaired some rust on the rear fender under the gas cap. It is almost impossible to fill the tank without having gas splash back out and run down the fender.

"I pretty much grew up around AMC's. My earliest memory is sleeping on the parcel shelf under the rear window in my Dad's Hudson Hornet on long trips (you wouldn't think of doing that now). He traded that in on a midnight black '59 Rambler wagon with a red stripe down the side and those BIG tail fins. That was traded in on a '62 Rambler Classic wagon which he had until I went into the Air Force.

"The interior was filthy when I got it, but it was in really good shape after a good cleaning. Shortly after I bought it, I had to have the transmission replaced along with the exhaust system and starter. Work I performed myself included F/R brakes, wheel cylinders, shocks, rack & pinion assembly, valve job, rocker arms & pivots, timing gears & chain, rebuilt carb and new master cylinder. After reconditioning the head, I had an exhaust leak between the exhaust manifold and the head. The heat had warped it and, since there is no gasket, I had to take it back off and have the manifold milled. I also have an ongoing exhaust leak between the exhaust and intake manifolds." -George Colleary

Pacer Car Hauler
191. "This will be the strangest Pacer photo in your archive. This car hauler was for sale in Oklahoma (the same place that Darryl Starbird's Spacer Pacer is in his museum) and asking price was $45,000. I understand it was on a Peterbilt platform, and you enter thru the rear hatch. I'm sure it could haul all the wrecked cars that had accidents doing a double take as this beast..." -Eddie Stakes
1974 AMC Annual Report
192. "[This] is from the 1974 American Motors Annual Report, which was sent to stockholders, dealerships, and others who were of importance to the company. This book is tough to find, but Annual Reports do occasionally pop up at National Meets. And while they are usually reasonable in price, they are worth picking up to see what went on behind the scenes at AMC." -Eddie Stakes

The cover reads:
"American Motors Corporation: The Responsive Company
American Motors has gained recognition and opportunity in the marketplace because its philsophy and programs are responsive to people's needs. American Motor's Pacer, unique in concept, illustrates again that the company is committed to providing distinctive ideas and products which are responsive to changing times. It will be introduced early in 1975."

Central Oregon Silver Wagon
Central Oregon Silver Wagon
196. These pictures come with a story from the Pacer Page WebChica. Thanksgiving weekend 1999, on the road from Sunriver back home to Portland, Oregon, I was driving along at quite a nice clip, when I spotted, out of the corner of my eye, this Silver Pacer Wagon parked in front of a very run-down roadside motel. I managed to scare the living daylights out of my victim-passenger boyfriend (now husband, so I guess this didn't traumatize him too badly) as I tore off the road and skidded into the gravel parking lot. Although the Pacer was missing four hubcaps and otherwise shoddy in appearance, it was still clearly road-worthy, which certainly counts for something! In my excitement, I took some very off-center photographs, which you see displayed here.
Another shot of the Amesbury AMC dealership
197. Another shot of the AMC dealership pictured in archive number 188: "This is a dealership that is about 45 minutes from my house. The photo of the dealership and my 78 Pacer was taken back in September. The building was built back in the 1920s as a modern gas station and garage. The owner's dad bought the garage and turned it into a dealership. I think it was a Willys Jeep dealership back in the 40s and 50s. They dropped the Jeep line and took on Rambler and Land Rover. Land Rover was dropped in the erly 70s. They had AMC up to the very end. There are no parts or literature at this dealership due to the fact that I bought them all. The building is currently being used as a car repair shop by the owner of the building. He still has a CJ2A Jeep from the 40s inside." -Steve

Ton & Diana's Pacer in the Netherlands
198. "So here's our '79 wagon, 6-cylinder. Looks good, drives even better. We've had it for a year now and never want to get rid of it again. One thing: Our hood ornament was stolen some time ago and we feel sort of naked without it now. We drive it daily, even with the fuel prices here in the Netherlands, which are $6 per gallon now!
Engine: 6-cyl. 4.2 litre, automatic transmission
Extras: PS
This one was in a garage for 5 years. In and outside very dirty and dusty. Now we are glad to be able to wash it clean.
